Onihunbo Obaship tussle: Court to rule May 11

An Ogun State High Court, Ipokia Judicial Division, has adjourned the ruling on the notice of preliminary objection filed by the state’s Ministry of Justice on the obaship tussle of the Onihunbo of Ihunbo in Ipokia Local Government Area of the state, till May 11, 2017.

The presiding judge, Justice S.M Owodunni, pronounced that the adjournment was inevitable due to the administrative lapses on the part of the court clerk who had erroneously recorded May 1 instead of April 27, for the case to come up before the court.

The Agbotejoye Ruling House had approached the court to challenge the installation of Oba Sunday Olamide Joseph of the Inakankan Ruling House, as the new Onihunbo of Ihunbo.

The claimant had contended that Oba Joseph who was installed on March 18, 2017, was illegally enthroned as it was not yet the turn of his ruling house.

It further stated that after the demise of Oba Jacob Fase Solagbade of Osupa ruling house in March 2014, after reigning for 24 years, it was the turn of Agbotejoye ruling house to produce the next Onihunbo.

In the suit, however, the claimant also joined the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ipokia Local Government Area, three kingmakers and members of Inakankan ruling house.

Meanwhile, the state government had filed an interlocutory application to challenge the competence of the action filed by the claimant in court.

The judge, who expressed his dismay over the error by the court clerk, however, set 11th of May, 2017 for the court to give a ruling on the matter.
