Ladipo blasts boxing promoters

By Paul Erewuba

The newly elected President of Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), Dr. Rafiu Ladipo has berated Nigeria Boxing Promoters for swindling boxers in the name of promoting their fights, saying they collect huge money, but would not pay boxers their dues.

Ladipo emerged president at an election held at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos after securing 20 votes to defeat Ademola Omotosho, who had two votes.

Ladipo, who promised to evolve a new era in boxing in Nigeria, said it was important that boxers, coaches and managers of the fistic game make money also because they climb the rings sweating, while training and during fight, bleeding and beaten by opponents.

“Why should these boxing actors not make money? In other countries like USA, UK, Canada, South Africa, Ghana etc, boxers are making money. Why not boxers in Nigeria?”

Continuing, he explained that the federation needed promoters and sponsors, including individuals who are keenly and genuinely interested in the game to assist in the development of the game.

He said that his regime would ensure that the NBB of C becomes member of international organisations like the WBC, WBA, WBF, IBO so as to be able to play international politics so that Nigerian boxers would be known, rated and given the opportunity to do their trade and at the same time make money for themselves.

“We will now hunt for young, talented boxers that will be nurtured and supported to become stars and world champions.

“Everything possible should be done and put in place for us to make our boxers rank among the best in Africa and the world.

“We will endeavour to have our own office, bus and build a strong and enviable NBB of C.

“We will also try to bring the new world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua to Nigeria to inspire our talented young boxers.

“Boxing in Nigeria will return to its glory days,” he stated.
