We’re yet to issue appointment letters to new PenCom helmsmen –Presidency

From Fred Itua, Abuja

The Presidency said it was yet to issue letters of appointments to the new Executive Management Team (EMT) of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

Speaking with Daily Sun on the issue, yesterday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, said the EMT would be offered letters of appointments after Senate confirmation.

He noted that management of pension funds is too serious to be taken lightly, and added that due process will be followed by ensuring the Senate confirms their appointments, in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Enang said: “I found out everything because your story put me on the alert. I’ve confirmed that no letter has been issued to any of the persons named by Mr President for any position in the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

“No letter has been issued to them and none of them will resume work tomorrow (today) until the appropriate provisions of the law are complied with. The former DG of PenCom handed over to the most senior officer in the Commission.

“Government is conscious of the fact that PenCom is the life of those who are working and those who will retire from work. The government will not do anything that will put the lives of workers in jeopardy.”

“There is no story about taking the safety of pension management processes unseriously. I am confirming that no person has been issued letters of appointments, except to nominate them.

“The nominations will follow the correct procedures of confirmation by the Senate before they assume office. In the mention of those appointed and their offices, it was stated, by Mr President, that it was subject to the confirmation by the Senate. Therefore, nothing is being done that will undermine the law.”

The Federal Government had, on Thursday, April 13, announced the removal of the former EMT, led by Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, and their replacement by a new set of Commissioners, led by Alhaji Aliyu Dikko Abdulrahman.

Consequently, Anohu-Amazu handed over to the Head of Corporate Responsibility and Servicom Department of PenCom, Aisha Dahir-Umar, as directed in her disengagement letter, which only arrived PenCom in the evening of Friday, April 21.
