Couple arraigned over alleged assault on woman

A couple, Calistus Obinna, 65, and his wife, Angela, 48, who allegedly conspired and beat up a woman, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, who are residents of Okota in Isolo, Lagos, were arraigned before Magistrate F. A. Azeez on a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and assault.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty, and were granted bail of N200, 000 with two sureties each.

According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Emanuel Ajayi, the couple beat up Mrs. Chidimma Igwe, deflated her car tyres and conducted themselves in a manner likely to breach the peace.

Ajayi said that the couple committed the offences in February at Isolo, Lagos.

“The complainant parked her Toyota Highlander in front of a hotel where she and her children came to have fun.

“The accused came and deflated the tyres without the consent of the complaint, claiming that the car blocked theirs.

“One of the complainant’s children, who saw the accused deflating the tyres, informed her, and she accosted the accused, demanding to know why her vehicle tyres were deflated.

“Both assaulted her by using sticks to hit her and punching her body,’’ the prosecutor said.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 168, 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The case has been adjourned until July 10 for mention. (NAN)
