Borno introduces volunteer teaching to cure education deficit

Borno State government has introduced volunteer teaching service to help restore its education sector seriously affected by six years of Boko Haram violence.

The state governor, Kashim Shettima announced on Wednesday in Maiduguri during the swearing in of newly appointed special advisers that qualified political office holders, public servants and other interested citizens who wish to teach in the state primary and secondary schools.

Shettima while also inaugurating chairmen of transition committees on reconstruction and safe resettlement of displaced persons in the state, said workers in the services of the Borno State government that enroll as volunteer teachers will be get work free days.

“I have said many times that I was going to teach and the time has come because I was waiting for us to achieve a lot in building and equipping schools. I will like to make a special appeal to all political appointees and particularly, civil servants at the state and local government levels to join me in volunteer teaching. I hereby direct the Head of Service to immediately consult with the SSG, the commissioner for education and chairman of SUBEB to come up with a steering committee for a Volunteer Teaching Programme that should comprise representatives of the NLC, NULGE, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, some serving and retired educationists, teachers and other relevant stakeholders,” the governor said.
