From: Tony Osauzo, Benin
Five members of a new generatin Church at Ugbowo, Benin-City, have been remanded in prison custody by an Evbuoriaria Chief Magistrate over alleged murder.
The accused persons: Godwin Ukrakpor,70, Uche esegine, 22, Taiwo omogoroye, 42, Austin Osaikhuwuomwan, 39 and meshak owuh, 28, were remanded on a two-count charge of murder of one of their church members.
They were alleged to have committed the offence at about 5:00 a.m. on July 1, 2017, at Sapele Road, Benin-City, while returning from an all-night church service.
The accused persons, who were charged in MEV/251c/17, were also alleged by the prosecution to have acted in a manner that negligently caused the death of the 19-year-old boy, Lucky Chukwuka, a member of the same church as the accused.
The accused persons’ pleas were, however, not taken owing to the magnitude of the offence, punishable under sections 316 and 325 of the criminal code.
Presiding Chief Magistrate, Frank Idiake, declined jurisdiction over the matter and consequently remanded them in prison custody and referred their case to the State DPP for legal advice.
