FG wades into gully erosion crisis in Nasarawa

The Federal Government has wadded into the gully erosion crisis in Nasarawa State following the alarm raised by Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura over the threatening floods that has claimed lives and sack many communities.

 Governor Al-Makura had called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the crisis before it would consume all his people as the devastating effects was above the capacity of the state government.

The state commissioner for environment, Barr. Gabriel Akakaa while conducting the committee on the visit of the federal government team on survey of ecological sites in Nasarawa State, on Tuesday, in Lafia, told them that the gully erosion had sacked several communities and sent  many to their early graves.

He warned that if urgent measures were not taken by the Federal Government, the entire state would be consumed by the ravaging gully erosion in the next four years.

Areas visited by the ecological team from the presidency led by Sulieman Umar included Tudun kauri, Taal Street, Ungwan Sha’au, Ungwan Doka, Gwangoro Emir Palace, Kilema, Lukumanu primary school, River Amba, Rice Mills, Ungwan Nungu and Bukan Sidi,  all in Lafia Local Government Area and some other erosion sites in Doma Local Government Area.

Daily Sun gathered that the gully erosion in Taal Street, Ungwan Sha’au, Ungwan Doka, Gwangoro, Kilema, Lukumanu areas measured between 80ft deep and 55ft and had destroyed houses and threatening lives.
