I wish this Senate can do better ours – Ex-Senator

Apparently not satisfied with the way and manner national issues were being handled in the Senate, a former member of the upper legislative chamber, Haruna Aziz Zego said he wished the present crops of the 8th Senate could do better in terms of fighting corruption as it was done during his time.
Sen. Zego, a retired Airforce Officer, was elected senator for the Southern Kaduna constituency of Kaduna State, at the start of the Fourth Republic, running on the platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) beween 1999 to 2003.
Speaking with journalists on the occasion of his 75th birthday celebration in Kaduna, the fourth Republic Lawmaker said he regretted that since the wake of democracy in 1999, Nigerians have not seen the reason to be united to fight common enemy of corruption.
Said he, “I regret that since 1999 Nigerians have not come together to fight evil of corruption.
“My wish is for the present Senate leadership to do better than us in the fight against corruption.
Zego also frowned at the perennial crisis between herdsmen and farmers across the country, praying that God would expose those behind the blood-letting.
On the issue of various agitations going on across the country, the German-trained fighter jet pilot warned youths in the country from plunging the nation into another civil war.
He said the country cannot afford another civil war because many people will lose brothers, sisters as well as relations that never be imagined.
Similarly, Sen. Mohammed Tukur Leman, Katsina State, who served with Zego in 1999, said the National Assembly of their time was a darling of every Nigerian.
Leman said, “I prefer 2003 Senate leafership because we were very united irrespective of party differences.
“We operated with high sense of probity. The PDP Senators were more in number than the opposition members, but we worked in unison. We put forward the interest of the country”.
He described the celebrant as a reliable and committed Nigerian who worked selflessly for the unity of the country.
Also, a chieftain of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Aminu Attah who came to felicitate with Senator Zego, described the celebrant as an elder brother to him.
Attah added, “He is a very gentle man and he is a person who cannot hurt a fly”.
