Ilesa science college celebrates students, staff

• Best student wants to be surgeon

IT was a celebration of excellence recently when the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Ilesa, Osun State, held its annual speech and prize-giving day. To celebrate excellence and hard work, the school management gave prizes and awards to students who distinguished themselves in their studies.
Those rewarded included students that excelled in national examinations such as WASCCE, NECO, SSCE and NABTEB as well as the Junior Secondary School (JSS) examinations in both science and technical education. Also rewarded were the best students in science and technical subjects across.
Members of staff who excelled were also given prizes. As they trooped out to receive their prizes, loud ovation rented the air by the guests, including parents, guardians and friends.
Babajide Omoworare, the senator representing Osun East presented some of the awards to the recipients, so also a House of Representative member, Ajibola Famura. The principal, Usman Ejeh, presented the Principal’s prize to the best students in English Language and Mathematics.
The principal charged graduates to be focused to achieve their goals in life: “Remember that the journey to greatness in life is not an easy task. Therefore, be focused and by God’s grace, you will achieve your goal. Never forget your parents who laboured for you and remember your alma-mater by lifting its flag higher as ambassadors wherever you find yourselves in future.”
He called on the Federal Government to show more commitment to the funding of unity schools, especially technical and science schools for improved infrastructure, laboratory equipment, library and other teaching/learning materials.
The overall best student, 15-year-old Folorunso Olawale, who finished with 81.8 percent, clinched prizes in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Economics and Auto Mechanics. He told Daily Sun: “I had the dream of excelling in my exams, but never expected that I could win many prizes even though they are my best subjects.  I can say that it is through hard work. It was not easy.
“I want to study Medicine at Obafemi Awolowo, University, Ile-Ife, and specialize in Surgery because my ambition is to become a surgeon to serve my society.”
Others included the College Prize in Public Speaking won by Sadiq Khalil and Oguntoyibo Ayosile in the male and female categories respectively; Best Student in Sports won by Samuel Oluwatobi and Fatubarin Elizabeth in the male and female categories; the Principal’s Prize for Best Student in English Language won by Afolabi Ahmad and Agwucha Chinaza; the Principal’s Prize for Best Student in Mathematics won by Adebowale Goodnesss, Alhaji TS Giwa’s Prize for the Best Student in Arabic Language won by Maliki Shakiru, Afolabi Ahmad and Adepoju Abdullahi among others.
The Best Head of Department was won by Mrs. Obasanya M.A; Teacher of the Year won by Mr. Ajani O.F as well as Best Teacher in the various departments.
Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, lauded the school management’s initiative in organizing the awards. He stressed that it was a veritable avenue to promote the education of the Nigerian children and to take stock of academic records and make great projections for the future.
He also expressed government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment capable of engendering improved standard education, especially in science and technical education.
