Ondo: Women group faults commissioners’ list
• Nominees to appear before Assembly today
From Bamigbola Gbolagunte, Akure
A group of women in Ondo State, under the aegis of Ondo State Women must Count (OSWMC), has faulted the list of commissioner nominees sent to the House of Assembly by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for confirmation.
Regardless, commissioner nominees will appear before the House of Assembly from today.
The House of Assembly yesterday, confirmed receipt of the list of commissioner nominees. The nominees are to appear before the lawmakers with copies of their credentials and curriculum vitae.
Meanwhile, National Coordinator of OSWMC, Mrs Olamide Falana, who led other women of the group on the protest, alleged that women were marginalised in the list.
“We express our displeasure and find unacceptable the recent list of commissioner nominees submitted by the Governor Akeredolu to the House of Assembly for screening.
“The said list shows a total disregard to the yearnings of women of the state who hitherto had high hopes of a better representation in numbers in the leadership of the state especially with the new thinking the governor professed.”
Falana lamented further that the inclusion of just two women out of 18 commissioner nominees was unacceptable.
Aside marginalization, the group also alleged that there was lopsidedness in the previous appointments in the state, declaring that “the government is merely paying lip service to issues of gender parity promised in its manifestoes.
“This is the worst among All Progressives Congress (APC) governed states where women have better deals as gender is not seen as a consideration in development of the state whereas no nation can develop to its full potential if major stakeholders are not allowed the space for due representation and participation.
“We demand the 35 percent affirmative action in all government appointments,” the group insisted.
