PCN fights sharp practices in hospitals

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has taken the fight to the states in a bid to rid hospitals of quacks and unwholesome practices.
The council has deployed eight teams of seasoned inspectors to all the geopolitical zones except the North East in its quest to improve practice standards in all areas of pharmacy practice.
The drive, according to the public relations officer of the council, Mr. Peter Iliya Ndirpaya, fsi, is to ensure the provision of quality pharmaceutical services including quality, safe, affordable and efficacious medicines for Nigerians.
“In the South East, hospitals in Ebonyi and Enugu States are being inspected. In the South West the inspectors are visiting Ogun, Oyo and Lagos States while Kano and Jigawa are the major stops in the North West. In North Central the team is visiting Plateau, Benue, Kogi and Kwara states.
“In the areas visited, we have carried out complete audit of the personnel, processes and infrastructure available in the pharmacy departments of each of the hospitals including their capacity for training of intern pharmacists” he said.
Where defaulters have been identified, there has been reprimand even though the idea is to ensure full maintenance of the standard of practice in hospital pharmacies. But Peter further explained that “sometimes sanctions, which come in form of blacklist, down grade of accreditation or outright closure of premises in extreme cases are applied, as the case may be”.
He also advised all accredited hospital pharmacies to renew their annual hospital pharmacy licenses as well as their internship accreditation status.
