Syria: ISIS extremists chop down sacred tree

ISIS fanatics have chopped down a tree fearing it was being worshipped as a god.

Pictures show jihadists from the group’s affiliated Khalid bin Walid Army taking a chainsaw to the branches of a tree in Syria after deeming it to be ‘polytheistic’.

It is the latest example of the terror group’s bid to purge society of anything that fails to conform to their violent interpretation of Islam.

Worshipping anyone other than Allah is punishable by death under ISIS’s brutal version of Sharia law.

Extremists have already destroyed many archaeological relics, deeming them pagan, and even Islamic sites considered idolatrous.

In the latest images, shared on jihadist social media channels yesterday, two men climb to the top of a tree and start hacking at branches with a chainsaw.

The ISIS affiliate, which has up to 1,500 members, was formed in 2016 and controls an area near Syrian-controlled part of Golan Heights.

It is not the first time ISIS has targeted trees for religious reasons.

According to the Independent, fanatics chopped down a 150-year-old oak tree in Atma, near Syria’s border with Turkey, after accusing locals of worshipping it.
