Okpekpe 10km International Race: I’ll run to raise funds for orphanages – Obaseki
From Tony Osauzo,
Benin
EDO State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has indicated his interest to join other athletes to run for ‘Charity’ in this year’s edition of Okpekpe 10km International Race, which comes up on May 13 in Okpekpe in Etsako East Local Government Area of the state.
Obaseki made the announcement shortly after registering to participate in the event when the management of Pamozi, promoters of the marathon race, visited him in Government House, Benin City, to unfold details of the event to him.
Obaseki, a member of Board of Trustees of ‘We Care Trust’, an NGO set up by the wife of the immediate past governor of the state, Mrs Lara Oshiomhole, to cater for Orphanages, explained that he decided to participate in the race to raise funds for the NGO.
He said the state was very proud to be associated with the Okpekpe International Race, adding, “we are very excited that this year’s race has incorporated some technology and has also been brought to more international standard.”
“One of the most interesting aspects of the race which I am proud of is the quality of the partners — Technical and Media. Government will carry the event around communities in the area to attract the young ones,” Obaseki said.
He thanked the promoters for acknowledging ex-governor Adams Oshiomhole’s role and the brand equity he had brought to the race by participating in all five past editions.
Earlier, the Managing Director of Pamozi, Mr. Mike Itemagbor named Oshiomhole as Honourary Patron of Okpekpe Race because of his participation in all editions of the event since its inception.
He explained that one of the reasons for coming up with the idea of Okpekpe Race was the outcry by members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Oshiomhole was constructing roads that led to nowhere.
According Itemagbor, “the Okpekpe Race was therefore to prove that the roads lead somewhere.”
